Trivia Tidbits for October 2009
October is
Spinal Health Awareness
Month
1. Chiropractic adjustments alone, do not generally correct chronic abnormal postural patterns and dysfunction. However, Nokomis Chiropractic Center uses the “Pettibon” approach which utilizes specialized rehabilitative exercises and stretches to help correct postural patterns. The benefits of the Pettibon approach and rehab exercises are: -postural corrections that can be seen on x-ray -reduces the number of visits needed for pain relief and correction -gives patients a way to maintain their spine so they need less care in the future
2. Chiropractic is based on the more holistic approach of maintaining health as opposed to the medical approach of treating disease and its symptoms.
3. The four most common effects of F.H.P. are neck pain, headaches, TMJ and arthritis.
4. Everyone needs to be on daily supplements, including: Daily Multivitamin, Omega-3 fat (flax seed/fish oil), Calcium and Anti-Oxidants.

8. What does homeostasis mean? Ability to maintain a system in a state of "constant" even though the external environment is constantly changing. i.e. our body temperature.
9. Name 5 systems of the body that are controlled by the nervous system. Immune, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular and reproductive systems.

16. Pfizer, the world's largest drug company, has been hit with the biggest criminal fine in U.S. history as part of a $2.3bn settlement with federal prosecutors for mispromoting medicines and for paying kickbacks to compliant doctors.
17. In a recent survey conducted by USA Today, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and the Harvard School of Public Health of 1,695 individuals taken in January of this year (2009), one third of Americans were prompted to ask their doctor about a drug they had seen advertised and an alarming 82 percent have a prescription written for them.
18. There are 45 miles of nerves in the skin of a human being.

21. Undertakers report that human bodies do not deteriorate as quickly as they used to. The reason, they believe, is that the modern diet contains so many preservatives that these chemicals tend to prevent the body from decomposing too rapidly after death.
22. There are approximately 65,000 chiropractors in North America combined.
23. The nervous system is the most important system of the body—so important in fact, that the spinal cord and brain are the only parts of the body totally encased in bone for protection.
24. The typical doctor of chiropractic’s training includes an eight-year program of undergraduate and professional college study and clinic internship prior to entering private practice.
25. There are seven cervical (neck) vertebrae, twelve thoracic (mid-back) vertebrae, and five lumbar (low-back) vertebrae. These vertebrae are stacked up like building blocks with discs, (shock absorbers) between them. Discs make up approximately one fourth of the length of the spine.
26. There are 31 pair of spinal nerves which extend down the spine from the brain and exit through a series of opening between the vertebrae

30. Gravity, Stress (physical, chemical & emotional) and Childbirth are the three leading causes of subluxations.
31. Only 10% of the nervous system perceives pain.
32. Every child should be checked for subluxations at birth or as soon as possible.
33. Most people have “sick” insurance instead of “health” insurance even though wellness and maintenance care save money in the long run.
34. Pettibon is the name of the chiropractic approach we use in this office. There are only a handful of clinics in Minnesota that provide the pre and post adjustment therapies in conjunction with at home exercises to provide long term correction.
