Most Common Forms of Arthritis
Most Common Forms of Arthritis
According to the Arthritis Foundation, over 50 million adults have a doctor’s diagnosis of arthritis. 50 million! Additionally, approximately 300,000 babies and children have some type of rheumatic condition or arthritis. Arthritis pain is our nation’s number one cause of disability and can therefore limit one’s ability to work the amount of work they do, and even the type of work they can perform. As a nation, arthritis is debilitating both individually and as a whole, and we should do everything within our power to help. At Nokomis Chiropractic and Wellness& and Wellness, we are a South Minneapolis, MN practice that offers relief from arthritis in a variety of ways.
Different Types of Arthritis
Arthritis is not a single disease, but rather a group of diseases that are linked to joint pain or disease. There are hundreds of different types of arthritis. Most commonly, we encounter and treat the following forms of arthritis:
Osteoarthritis: As the most common form of arthritis, osteoarthritis is a chronic condition of the joints. Typically, the cartilage between the joints breaks down which leads to pain, stiffness, and sometimes swelling.
Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD): Degenerative joint disease is the inflammation of the joints around the tissues.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Common in both children and adults, Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints because the body’s immune system is mistakenly attacking itself.
Lupus: While Lupus can affect many different body systems due to its autoimmune system being hyperactive towards normal tissues, it can also play a dramatic role in causing pain and swelling to the joints.
Fibromyalgia: Considered a rheumatic condition as well, fibromyalgia can cause pain and fatigue to joints without exactly knowing the cause.
Gout: A common complaint that leads people to the ER, gout can cause severe pain, redness, and tenderness in joints without any warning. Typically, this is believed to be due to an excess of uric acid building up in the joints.
Juvenile Arthritis: One of the saddest diseases to bare witness to, juvenile arthritis is inflammation of the tissue that lines the joint (synovium) in children 16 or younger.
